This beautiful quality mortar and pestle. It is made of marble. The outside of the mortar and the pestle is a smooth marble and the inside of the mortar is a rough marble , this makes for a more even grinding of the herb. This mortar and pestle is such a wonderful piece it makes grinding herbs so much easier than trying to do it any other way . There is no mess with this mortar and pestle because everything thing stays right in the bowl , there is also no waste with this mortal and pestle.
