It heats up in just seconds. The temperature starts at 140F and goes up to 450F . I tried it out on 450 and my hair is wavy and curly . Some spots it's just wavy and then other spots it's curly . Then I wear my hair in a ponytail a lot. My hair is also very dry and because of that most weeks I only wash my hair twice a week and if I wear my hair in a ponytail, then I have a line all the way across my head from my ponytail holder . So if the first day I wear a ponytail, I have to wear one until I wash my hair again . With this straightener I ran it threw my hair a couple times and the line was gone . So now I can wear a ponytail one day and then wear my hair down . This straightener makes my hair shiney . It is just a wonderful straightener .
